“I'm not avoiding work, I'm just overwhelmed by the sheer volume of nothingness that needs to be done.” - Unknown .
Are you feeling overwhelmed lately? Join the club! As a wife, business owner and coach, I can sympathize with the feeling of being swamped with too many tasks or responsibilities. It's like being caught in a whirlwind of to-do lists, deadlines, and obligations. But don't worry, you're not alone!
In fact, overwhelm is such a common experience that there are many funny quotes and memes about it. Here are some of my favorites:
"I'm not procrastinating, I'm prioritizing my overwhelm." - Unknown
"I'm not sure if I'm managing my time well or if time is managing me." - Unknown
"I have so much to do that I'm going to bed." - Unknown
"I can't adult today. I need a nap." - Unknown
Isn't it hilarious how these quotes perfectly capture the feeling of being overwhelmed? It's like they understand us better than we understand ourselves!
But in all seriousness, overwhelm can be a real problem. It can lead to stress, anxiety, and even burnout if left unchecked. So, what can we do to manage overwhelm? How do we get a little more time in our day?
One strategy is to break down big tasks into smaller, more manageable ones. For example, instead of thinking "I need to write a 10-page report by the end of the week," try breaking it down into smaller goals like "I'll write 2 pages a day for 5 days." This way, you can make progress without feeling like you're drowning in work.
See if someone can help you. Perhaps someone can carpool the kids, pick up something at the store, help with the kitty litter box, etc. Also the need for perfectionism makes certain tasks endless. Try to be a little less anal about how things have to look, folded, or cleaned.
Another strategy is to prioritize your tasks based on importance and urgency. It's easy to get caught up in the small, less important tasks and forget about the big picture. By prioritizing, you can focus on what really matters and avoid wasting time on things that can wait.
Try balancing your chakras upon wakening. Here is a PDF for you to print out and have on your night stand. Use this each morning to start our day off with a clean slate of focused and balanced energy.
Try to write a Brain Dump. Mel Robbins https://www.melrobbins.com/ has this overwhelm thing down to a science. Being overwhelmed is really nothing more than having a full brain. On a given morning before you even walk out the door, you might be checking emails, looking at spreadsheets, texts, social media, checking your kids’ schedules, making mental lists - to say the least, your brain is FULL. That’s why you feel overwhelmed. So while you are enjoying your morning cup of coffee, take a large notebook or your planner and write down everything that comes up. Things you need to do, things you need to remember and clear out your brain to the last thought. Now take a highlighter and mark 3 things that will help you advance to what really is important. Do those things.
And of course, don't forget to take breaks! Sometimes, the best thing you can do when you're overwhelmed is to step away from your work and take some time to recharge. Whether it's going for a walk, watching a funny video, or taking a power nap, taking breaks can help you come back to your work with a fresh perspective and renewed energy. You will work faster with a clear mind!
In conclusion, overwhelm is a common experience that we all face from time to time. But with some humor, perspective, and strategies, we can manage it and come out stronger on the other side.
Remember to say to yourself: "I get to do this" instead of "I have to do this".
Take a deep breath, prioritize your tasks, and create a little more time for YOU!
