The Staircase of Life

January 16, 20243 min read

"Life is a journey up a spiral staircase; as we grow older we cover the ground covered we have covered before, only higher up; as we look down the winding stair below us we measure our progress by the number of places where we were but no longer are. The journey is both repetitious and progressive; we go both round and upward."

~ William Butler Yeats

The Staircase of Life: Each Step Tells a Story

Much like a grand staircase, life is a journey that unfolds step by step, each bearing the weight of experiences, lessons, and moments that shape our existence.

Each step, ascending or descending, tells a unique story – a narrative of triumphs, setbacks, love, and growth. You can think of some victory dances and a few tumbles; I know I can!

Picture it: the upward climb is where we conquer stuff, the moments where we rise above challenges, overcome obstacles, and reach new heights. Each upward step signifies personal growth, resilience, and the strength of navigating life's peaks. It can be daunting to see the rising steps in front of us, and sometimes, we must try hard to gather the strength to keep climbing.

Then there's the downhill slide when we learn a thing or two. It's a recognition that growth often emerges from embracing vulnerability and acknowledging the areas where we can evolve—a little setback, but with new tools to get you climbing again and coming back stronger.

Life's staircase also has cool handrails – our friends, family, and mentors – helping us navigate twists and turns. I am grateful for everyone who has supported me and still encourages me today!

And those landings? They're like pit stops, little places to catch our breath, celebrate, or change direction. Taking time to pause and check on the view helps us recalibrate. You can do that for a few minutes each day by:

  1.  Box breathing (4,4,4,4 counts in, hold, out, hold)

  2.  Enjoying a particular moment, just taking in the beauty and good around you

  3.  Making time for a quick meditation upon awakening, during your day or before sleep

  4.  Journaling in the morning or evening to acknowledge your journey of ups and downs.

Appreciate climbing the staircase of life, each step, recognizing that the beauty lies not just in reaching the top but in the entirety of the journey – the good, the bad, and the downright messy.

Staircase

After all, this is your life unfolding.

PS. A great way to stop when you reach a landing is to reflect and look around and inside of you. What have you learned going up, and what may have slowed you down? Who has supported you on this last climb? This new chapter looks exciting, but where do you get the strength to keep climbing?
