Are you playing it safe or taking risks?

March 26, 20244 min read

"Take chances, make mistakes. That's how you grow. Pain nourishes your courage. You have to fail in order to practice being brave."

~ Mary Tyler Moore

In life, you're often faced with a choice: Do I take risks or play it safe?

This decision can shape our experiences, opportunities, and, ultimately, our destinies.

Playing it safe may seem logical – it's comfortable, predictable, and minimizes the chance of failure. But in playing it safe, you may also miss out on the excitement, growth, and fulfillment that come from taking risks.

Taking risks, on the other hand, opens up a world of possibilities. It pushes you out of our comfort zones, challenges you to grow and evolve, and can lead to unexpected opportunities and successes.

My hubby and I couldn't be more different if we tried. He's all about staying cozy in his comfort zone and sticking to what he knows works, while I'm the eternal explorer, constantly seeking new experiences and ways to grow.

At first glance, you might think we're a recipe for disaster. I mean, how can someone who loves routine and predictability coexist with a perpetual adventurer and learn-crazy like me? But you know what? Our differences are what make us stronger.

Sure, there are times when our opposing viewpoints clash. He'll roll his eyes when I suggest a better option of food choices, and I'll sigh when he insists on watching the same old movie for the umpteenth time. But you know what? We've learned to find common ground and embrace each other's quirks.

Choices

I love to learn new things and do something I haven't tried before. Of course, taking risks isn't always easy. It requires courage, resilience, and a willingness to face uncertainty. But those moments of uncertainty often lead to the greatest rewards – whether it's landing your dream job, starting a successful business, or finding love in unexpected places.

Recently, in a poll I posted in 333 Collective by Third Act Quest, I asked: Are you open to making changes in your life, whether it's trying new activities, pursuing new hobbies, or exploring new possibilities? 85% of women responded, "Absolutely, I am open to change," while 15% said, "Maybe, depending on the opportunity." These responses were from women 50+ and over, and I think as we get on in the years we may feel more comfortable taking chances. Of course, we need to be able to do something new and different, but only if we can afford to do this and are physically capable of doing it.

JOURNAL PROMPT:

Take a moment to reflect on a significant decision you've made in the past, one that required courage and bravery.

  • What was the decision, and what factors influenced your choice?

  • How did you feel leading up to making the decision, and how did you feel afterward?

  • What were the risks and potential rewards associated with your decision?

  • How did it impact your life, and what did you learn from the experience?

  • Finally, looking back, do you feel proud of the decision you made, and would you make the same choice again?

Take some time to journal about your thoughts and feelings surrounding this decision, exploring both the challenges and triumphs it brought into your life.

As you navigate life's journey, consider this: are you playing it safe or taking risks? Remember that growth and fulfillment often lie just beyond your comfort zone. Explore the unknown, seize opportunities, and dare to take risks – because in those moments of uncertainty, you'll truly discover what you're capable of.
